Hello! It’s currently Tuesday night and this is the first time I’ve opened my computer since Saturday morning. A few reasons for that, but the main one being that my computer died. Boom, crash, gone. Long story short I bought a new one and it kind of feels like Christmas morning. But that is the smallest change in my life lately because, ummmm…I’m living in New York. Officially.
I have so much to say and yet I don’t know if I will ever find the right words to describe how I’m feeling. Feelings are weird, remember? Basically, it’s what I expected to be feeling (nervous, excited, overwhelmed) and I’m handling it like a champ as best as I can. That means doing little things for comfort, like running and eating at Whole Foods, while slowly exploring the area like the big girl I am. Seriously, who allowed me to live in this big city alone? Aren’t I still in high school?
Before my dad left we spent some time wandering the city. To say he is the best is the understatement of the century. I’m really lucky. We had so much fun together eating and walking and eating and walking. He even let me wear leggings, a sweatshirt and messy bun out all day…take that, mom ;) The only thing we didn’t do was run together in Central Park (damn weather). Next time, definitely.
Enough words. Let’s do pictures, mainly of food. I’m going to do a gluten-free in NYC post once I try more places. I’ll update the list as the summer goes on!
Dinner at Local Thyme: Kale + roasted sweet potato + beets + pumpkin seeds + avocado + tahini dressing
Braving the crowds at Whole Foods. The checkout line is INSANE.
Wine in the hotel. Wish I could have lived there this summer…
A run through Central Park. Even on a dreary, rainy day it still looked gorgeous.
Dinner at Dig Inn. Lemon herb chicken + kale and rhubarb salad + sweet potatoes
I feel like there is so much more to share, but I’ll end it here today. Hopefully Mother Nature gets the memo that it’s JUNE not March. This Florida girl is spoiled with the weather…and she likes it that way. Any gluten-free friendly restaurant recommendations send them my way! I have so many on my list but could always use more.
It looks like you’re having a nice time settling in. I think I’d feel very intimidated living in a big city. I like New York a lot, but don’t think I could live there. I think you’ll flourish this summer and love it!

That’s so nice of you to say, Sam! It is definitely intimidating but it helps that I’ve been here many times before.
Looks amazing! Yeah you’ll definitely need to get used to this Northeast weather though :)
Seriously when it hits June 21 I expect normal summer weather :)
I am so excited for your NYC food pics!! They already look amazing. I’ve totally been there- when you move somewhere and your parents are with you and you stay in a hotel the first couple nights and you’re just like can I just live here instead…. haha! I’m so jellyyyy that you get to run in Central Park! I can’t wait to hear more about your NYC runs, too!

The hotel struggle is real. Luckily my parents are visiting a few times and I will be staying with them when that happens. Wish you could come try all of the workout places with me!
All your eats so far look so good! I bet you are going to have a fun time trying out all the NYC eats while you are there! Can’t wait to hear more about your NYC adventures. Hope the rest of your week goes well!

That is honestly one of the best parts! There are places on every corner. Thanks, Brie!
I have lived in San Diego, Denver, and now Houston. :) I did do an internship in NYC one summer, but I did the commute from my Mom’s home in NJ. I have never had any desire to live in NYC, but I love to visit my friends and EAT there of course. Glad you are settling in well!

You’re a city-regular then! San Diego is on my list of places I want to explore.
I used to live outside the city in NJ and still know a few people who are commuting in for jobs/internships.
Sooo I think I’m gonna live vicariously through you this summer. I’m already scheming about trips to NYC – too many of my friends live there for me not to go about 100 times this summer.
If you’re ever looking for coffee shop recommendations that’s my sweat spot.
Also there’s nothing better than the feeling of a new computer!

Please come visit!!! Even if I only steal ya for an hour it would be great to meet you!
My dad has celiac and we recently went to NYC. We loved this cute Italian place called Senza Gluten. Also a huge fan of all the Westville restaurants! Their veggie plates are the best.
Thank you so much! Will look at both of those places :)
Get yourself to SweetGreen!
And my favorite city will always be DC!

I’ve been to SweetGreen! Awesome place but always SO crowded when I go.
Ahhh I am so excited for ya! As a fellow young adult, I can completely relate to the feeling of WHO LET ME BE INDEPENDENT feeling when it comes to moving to a new area and being in charge of your life. Crazy!
Hope you’re living it up! <3

Right?! Like I don’t feel nearly old enough to be able to do this. But I sure am grateful. Thanks, girl <3
I used to work in NYC and I LOVED my lunches from Dig Inn. So delicious. There’s an amazing restaurant (kind of pricey) that is totally vegan – Candle 79. It’s on the UES. They also have a cafe, which is delicious for a mid day lunch treat! I lived in Philadelphia for graduate school which was definitely a huge adjustment coming out of a rural college town. So glad you’re getting out and exploring the city – it has so much to offer! Happy Wednesday : )

Oh thank you!!! I’ve seen Candle 79 on a few restaurant lists and saw that it was pricey but I didn’t now about their cafe. I think exploring the city is helping a lot with the adjustment as I oddly feel more sad in my dorm room? Whatever works I guess ;)
That salad looks bomb. And running in Central Park is definitely on my list of things to do at some point. I have been to NYC a few times but it was always in the winter and I couldn’t imagine running since I am a giant wimp when it comes to weather. The only time I have lived in a city was when I studied abroad in Florence for 4 months and gosh do I miss it. I would say that is my favorite city in the world. But now I can’t imagine living in a city! So excited to read about your adventures!!

My mom studied abroad there and says the same thing! I only visited for a day (a stop on our cruise) but it was stunning. Glad to have another weather-wimp on my side ;) I think I need to buy more clothes because I was not prepared for this. I brought all tank tops and light-weight clothes. Oops…
Ahhh can’t wait to hear ALL about your summer adventures!!! Running in central park is the best. June is always a huge toss up with weather up here in the northeast. One week it’s 90 degrees and the next it’s 40… awesome. Best of luck adjusting and remember you can always reach out if you need anything!

Yup that’s exactly how it’s been weather-wise. I don’t mind the cold as much as the gray skies. Emailing you ASAP!
Stay patient, lady – you’ll adjust. <3 This is such an awesome growth period and opportunity for you. Also — no matter where you go, Whole Foods will always feel like home! :) Hehe.

Thanks, Em. I know you’re right. There are like 5 Whole Foods in the city and I am making my way through the list. It’s crazy how comfortable I feel there!
Currently I live in the country, but the city is totally my happy place. Love these photos – they actually make me miss my old home!

If I won the lottery I would totally have a house in the country and the city. A little bit of both seems ideal to me :)
I’ve moved from a 3,000 person ski town to Portland. While it’s not a huge city like New York, it feels huge to me now! Enjoy the city!
That is a huge change! I had a similar move from a town of 5,000 to Tampa, although I was with my family. I think any move away from our “normal” takes getting used to.
I’m so so so excited for you! Hope you’re settling in okay! :)

It’s been FREEZING and so rainy the past couple of days here in NYC! I hope it’ll warm up soon :)
WHAT IS WITH THIS WEATHER?! Haha I heard the weekend will be better!
Adjusting to a new place is always a little overwhelming, especially in NYC! I hope you can get settled in and enjoy your time there! Excited for ya girl!

Thanks, Lacey! I’ve been taking it day by day and exploring small areas of the city to avoid feeling too overwhelmed.
Congrats on moving to New York! I’m so jealous! I would absolutely love to live there. The photos you’ve taken of the city so far are beautiful, and I’m sure you’ll have such an amazing time living there!!! Also – I’m so glad I just found your blog! It’s amazing! :)
Thank you! It’s just a temporary summer move but I’m happy to be here. So glad you found my blog :)
