Day in the Life of a Recent College Grad

02/10/16 | Food, Life, Link-up

In this funemployment stage of life I’m conflicted between being productive and completely relaxing. I’m finding myself wanting to do everything and nothing at the same time. Not a good combo, right? Most days there’s a good balance, and I do feel better when I’ve accomplished something, but I also want to take full advantage of this freedom.

Regardless, yesterday was a decently busy day so I wanted to post a “day in the life.”

Day in the Life of a Recent College Grad

5:45 a.m.– Snooze my alarm. I decide to skip my early morning run with my dad and sleep later. No, I don’t have to wake up that early to workout, but I really enjoy running with my parents. Sleep won this time.

6:45 a.m.– Wake up for real and watch the news before getting out of bed.

7:25 a.m.- Make breakfast. Since I’m in “life after Whole30” (final thoughts coming tomorrow) I made a smoothie bowl.

Base: Almond milk + banana + blueberries
Toppings: KIND healthy grains, coconut flakes, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, goji berries

day in the life

8 a.m.– Finish breakfast and start working on a few side projects

10 a.m.– Run 3 miles on the treadmill at the gym. Scary side story…just as I was finishing on the treadmill an older man next to me fell off and hit his head. I’ve fallen off a treadmill before and it gave me flashbacks. I ran to get help and the staff called paramedics. By the time I left he was sitting up and laughing. Sheesh…what we get for trying to be healthy!

11 a.m.– Leave gym and go to Whole Foods + Target AKA the two biggest money and time suckers. Here’s a shot of my basket.

day in the life

12:15 p.m.– Arrive back home and make a loaf of banana bread. This time I could test it! Hope to share it on the blog soon.

day in the life

1 p.m.– Make and eat lunch. A typical salad bowl with toppings: avocado, chicken tenders, sunflower seeds, carrots and blueberries. Here’s a repeat picture of a very similar dish.

day in the life

1:30 p.m.– Finish some projects while watching Grey’s reruns. If you aren’t watching Grey’s every day on Lifetime from 1-4 then you have no life, probably have a busy life.

2:30 p.m.– Nap. Zero shame.

3:30 p.m.– Eat a quick snack of celery and cashew butter and leave for my afternoon job.

4:15 p.m. – 6 p.m.– Work

6:30 p.m.– Dinner. A hodgepodge of a meal…turkey tenderloins (love as a change), a purple sweet potato and roasted vegetables + peaches. This photo is “real” life, hence the already cut up foods.

day in the life

7 p.m.– Start this blog post while finishing up some side work.

8:30 p.m.- Eat an apple and a few spoonfuls of Barney Butter while watching the primary recap.

9 p.m.– Catch up with my parents and finish this post.

10 p.m.– Bed. Getting up at 5:30 for a spin class. By the time this publishes my workout will be done. Best. feeling. ever.

I’m “funemployed” and I wake up at 5 or 530 every day. Partially because that was my schedule for so long that it is just ingrained in me. I hear you on there being times that you just soak it up and times when you put the pedal to the metal, as it were.

I’ve always been an early riser but I think I trained myself in high school to wake up in the 6 o’clock hour. So, yes, it’s partially ingrained in me too.

Gah this is my dream day! Especially with the cashew and Barney butter! I’m so happy that you’re enjoying yourself right now and you’re finding such a balance throughout the day. A lot of people’s funemployment consists of very unfulfilling activities, but you’re doing so much! Keep living the good life!

It looks like you have a perfect mixture of productivity and relaxing :) And also.. that banana bread looks so so so delicious! I’ve been working out in the mornings recently and for me “early” is waking up at 6:15 compared to 7:15 haha.

Hey, that is still early! Even though I wake up around 6:30 I don’t want to be committed to anything until 8 or 9 a.m. That gives me enough time to leisurely workout if I want and then eat breakfast.

Right now I am waking up at 6:30 to workout, which is a lot nicer than when I had to wake up at 5:30 since I had earlier classes last semester. It is crazy how much better I feel working out when the sun actually comes out. I always love seeing the sunrise as I finish a run. Though, I know that when I start student teaching in the fall it will be a whole new ballgame since I’ll have to be at work so early, but for now I am enjoying the later start!

Yes I hated when I had early classes (for obvious reasons) but mainly because it meant getting up even earlier if I wanted to workout. Much better rising with the sun!

Love the balance in these funemployment days. When I had finished the bar exam and had two months off before starting my job, I was the same way – my workouts and natural early riser tendencies always got me out of bed by 8am, and having running and the luxury of working a lot more on the blog provided some structure to otherwise lovely, lazy days!

I still have yet to try a purple sweet potato. They look so good and the color is unreal! At night, I like to snack on a spoonful of almond butter or fruit…or both :-) The earliest I’d wake up for a workout is probably 5:45 for a 6am class. Anything earlier and I am a hot mess!

    • Emily says

      February 10, 2016 at 8:19 pm

Both…always go for both fruit and almond butter. Buy the sweet potato if you can find it! Whole Foods is a hit or miss.

The earliest I’ve ever gotten up for a run was 4:30am. That was rough and I’m glad I haven’t had to do that for a while. Before bed I like a sweet treat like a brownie. Makes my tummy happy :-)

You do funemployment right! Although I don’t know how you find the motivation to wake up in the 5 ‘o clock hour to work out haha I can’t even do that on days I’m at work! If my parents still ran though, I’d probably want to run with them too. And all the good fitness instructors seem to teach at ungodly hours.

Something about the “5” on the clock makes it so rough. I’ve snoozed more days lately because it’s been cold outside too. Can’t even imagine waking up in the 4 o’clock hour, which I know people do.

I may be in love with the color of purple sweet potatoes more than orange. It’s so awesome that God has made our food with so much color. And your smoothie bowl looks so good with all of the toppings arranged in parallel. :)

5.45-6.00am alarms get me out by 6.15 which means I can get good session in before work. I built most of my funemployment around runs, gym classes and coffee dates!

Hope you have a lovely week xx

Why weren’t we on funemployment together?! It would have been runs and coffee dates every single day.

  18. Kristy @ Southern In Law says

    February 10, 2016 at 7:39 pm

All of your eats look so good! I am loving those purple sweet potatoes too!

My nighttime snack changes but at the moment it tends to either be a hot chocolate with a homemade cookie or baked good or some 90% dark chocolate with peanut butter and a cup of tea (I have so many different teas that I usually switch it up every night, however, recently a friend gave me some choc mint rooibos tea and a caramel oolong tea which are both incredible!)

I always wake up at around 6am (that’s just when I wake up!) so I usually eat breakfast and then workout around 630ish if I’m heading out for the day or a little later if it’s the weekend/I’m working from home.
