Friday has never looked better. Yes, that’s all I’ve got for today’s intro…this week wore me out. I’m heading out-of-town for the weekend but first, I need to tell you about a few things from my week.
Five Things Friday: Highs & Lows Edition.
High: Going to the Saturday Night Live Exhibition with my friend. The exhibit took you behind the scenes of a week at SNL starting with the writing process and progressing to the set design, costume design, rehearsal and finally the show. The staff basically works 24 hours six days a week. Sunday is time to “rest, recover and get ready to do it all again.”
Low: Buying a new shower towel because I was too lazy to do laundry. This is my real life, people.
High: Seeing Late Night with Seth Meyers! My friend got very last-minute tickets for us to go to the Tuesday night taping and it was a blast. The guests were B-list (Sir Ben Kingsley, Mike Birbiglia and Senator Lindsey Graham), but still cool to see live.
Low: Cell phone use was extremely prohibited, even in the waiting area. If security saw someone take a picture they had to watch them delete it from their phone. Not sure why it was so strict because the waiting area wasn’t that special.
High: Going to a new ClassPass class called Fitness Runs. It was an outdoor running class in Central Park. I went to the RUN + YOGA class so it was 30 minutes of running drills (think short sprints and bodyweight movements) and 20 minutes of yoga. It wasn’t much running at all, but more performance and technical work…which is so important but I typically neglect.
Low: This Instagram. I could write a whole post on my thoughts (I just might), but overall I was very disappointed in Self. I am a magazine-junkie but I’m getting sick of this type of content. BUT to counter this low, I then saw the new cover of Women’s Running Magazine (see below). More than just featuring a “normal” (I hate that word, but go with it) woman on their cover (who is gorgeous), they didn’t really call attention that she didn’t have a typical runner’s body, which I like. These things should be accepted and, while praise is good, should be standard by now. #end rant
High: Three cartons for FIVE DOLLARS. I walked in for a water bottle (literally) and left with three cartons of blueberries.
Low: Having to write a 10-page paper for my summer class. Guess this is a rude awakening for the upcoming semester.
High: These sweet potato fries from Lyfe Kitchen.
Low: That I finished said sweet potato fries.
*BONUS HIGH: I’m going to Rhode Island this weekend to see my cousins, Sarah and run a half marathon. All good things, all good things.
High: Catching up with a friend I hadn’t seen in about 9 months over Chipotle.
Low: Having to go to three stores before finding a somewhat appropriate birthday card for my grandpa.
And I’ve actually been pretty disappointed with both Self and Shape lately, which is no fun because I also really enjoy magazines. I liked them for a long time, but I don’t think they successfully emphasize health over appearance and while no publication is perfect, I feel they’ve gotten worse.

I think I spend an unnecessarily long amount of time looking for the right birthday card. That and I just like reading them :) I enjoy magazines too so I’m disappointed with the direction the “health” magazine industry is heading. I tend to like Women’s Health but they are all very appearance based now.
It’s actually on my “30 by 30” list to see a live taping of a show! I got close this summer when American Ninja Warrior came to town and I had tickets, but unfortunately the process was really badly organized and I never got to the taping :( such a bummer.

That would have been an awesome taping to see! I saw Regis & Kelly when Regis was still on. It wasn’t too hard to get those tickets!
I’ve never been to a taping of a show but the next time I am in NYC I really want to see the taping of Jimmy Fallon! That is probably the only late night show I watch somewhat regularly (online a few days later of course haha) and love it. Have fun this weekend and good luck! Can’t wait to hear all about it!!

Woohooo so excited for your race! I have a sneaky suspicion you’re going to kill it! : ) High from this week = it being Friday (it’s been a tough one) haha and Low = a brutal brutal tempo run on Tuesday. I loveddd the Womens Running cover. How motivating… and as far as Self… unfortunately to be expected. Their publication is all about “how to lose those last 10 pounds” or “lose a dress size in a week!” type articles which I find absolutely offensive anyway so unfortunately the “best body in the world” does not shock me.

Last week was rough for me too, but this weekend made things better! Hope it did the same for you :) I feel like years ago Self/Shape/etc. used to have non-celebrities on their covers and I liked that a little better. But the articles need to change to actual health-related topics.
My family and I tried to get tickets for Fallon but they sold out in a second. FYI they go on sale a full month before the show (so for an August taping they went on sale July 1). We were on 3 different computers trying to get tickets but they were gone :(
I agree with you about magazines…used to be really into them but now I rarely buy any because I HATE the messages behind them. Especially the healthy/fitness ones. I don’t want to see one more article about how to get a summer body in 2 weeks…sigh. So jealous you and Sarah get to meet up this weekend!!! Have fun girly!

I love reading magazines but the content in the health/fitness ones seems to be repetitive and almost belittling. We don’t always have to be working to lose weight or “tone up.”
3 cartons for $5? Score!!! Good luck on your half marathon and I hope you have a fun weekend with Sarah and your cousins :)

I had a blast this weekend, thanks! I wish there was a blueberry sale like that EVERY day.
The SNL tour sounds so cool! That’s awesome!!
And Run+yoga workout sounds so good! Perfect mix ;)
Holy blubs!! (I’m eating some now)…but wow, jealous!!! Stock up!
Have a fun trip Emily!!

Thanks, girl! Seeing clips throughout the exhibit made me want to go online and watch old SNL episodes. I might have during work the next day ;)
It sounds like you had some great highs this week! I’m so jealous of all of the fun things you’ve been up to! Have a great weekend. :)
Trying to fill up my last few days here with as much as I can! I’ll be in need of some rest when I get home next week.
How awesome you got to see the SNL exhibit AND Seth Meyers! What a fun week! Ahhh, don’t remind me about 10 page papers… the semester starts so soon!
Living in Los Angeles, I have actually been to a lot of tapings! I won’t name them all because it would be too long of a list. Have a great weekend, Emily! :)

I’m at page 5 and can’t force anymore LOL. Welcome back to school :( Oh I’ve bet you’ve been to some awesome ones! Would love to hear about them!
Those fries…yes please! This week being over…yes please! I’m beyond tired of Self, Fitness, and Shape magazines. Their women are models not athletes. I used to subscribe to all of them, but I stopped a over 3 years ago, because I don’t agree with their content. Enjoy your weekend…WAHOO!

I WISH they had athletes on their covers. SO much more inspiring to me than models and celebrities who have tons of money, makeup and help.
Ah I wish I lived in NYC just so I could do the Run + Yoga class! I’ve never been to a taping, surprising because I live in southern california….I’ve happened upon some movie sets here and there but I would LOVE to see Jimmy Fallon live, he’s the best.

The Run + Yoga class seems like such an easy concept that I’m surprised I haven’t seen it other places! Casually walking on a movie set? Um, I’ll take that!
Totally agree with the cover ladies! Like you said, I think the best part of the women’s running mag cover is that they didn’t make a big deal of it… because it’s not a big deal. Baby steps!
Also, I’m a huge Mike Birbiglia fan so totally jealous that you saw him!

He was so funny! I had never heard of him before but he made me want to see Trainwreck.
