My last snow day was approximately 2,400 days (almost 7 years) ago when I lived in New Jersey. Safe to say it’s been a while since an impending storm has sparked any possibilities of a school/class cancellation for me. Toward the end of last week the genius weathermen started warning Floridians of Tropical Storm Erika. A hurricane hasn’t hit Florida in 10 years so not only did I not know what to expect, most residents here are rusty on their hurricane preparations. For about 48 hours straight the news was a constant reel of “tips for preparing for a hurricane” and “how to stay safe in a storm.” The Type-A planner in me was kind of freaked out so I bought and did everything the news suggested…
Canned food, flashlights, batteries, a full tank of gas, candles, cash and water bottles galore.
I went to bed expecting to wake up to no power but other than the craziest and loudest thunder I have ever heard in my life, Erika was non-existent.
This is what campus looked like yesterday….no evidence of any storm.
Erika did do a lot of damage in the Caribbean and showed how dangerous these natural disasters can be. I’m very thankful there wasn’t any damage or flooding but man was I hoping for a Hurricane Day yesterday.
No Erika meant I time for some weekend activities, all of which required power (I’m so dependent). Side note: how much must it suck to share a name with a storm?
Sunday morning yoga after church. Love this quote.
Getting lost in the black hole that is Target. Only left with two things (!!).
FaceTiming with my family. This is my dog playing with his “blog” toy. My mom said he was thinking of me (“awww…”).
A little cooking and meal prep that made last night’s dinner very easy.
And, of course, the weekend ended by watching future president Kanye West announce his run for office. I literally laughed out loud when I heard him say that.
How was your weekend?
When was your last weather-related class/work cancellation?
My mom’s name is Erika, so we kept joking about her storm. Thank goodness nothing bad happened!! I went to school in Central Pennsylvania (Penn State!) so we had lots of bad weather, but class was never cancelled. I remember some days were so bad that I basically had to ice skate to class! In high school though, we had lots of delays and snow days. That was always fun :)
There was a hurricane Emily a few years ago and I remember feeling almost guilty. Weird. I feel like in places where you get so much snow they don’t give you much leeway with days off.
They always build these things up WAY more then is ever needed :P

I’m glad they were wrong this time but it definitely could have been scary!
My weekend went by far too fast, but I finally felt like I was able to relax a bit since no travel (besides NYC) was really involved. I think the last time I had a weather related cancellation, wasn’t actually a cancellation, but instead the snow storm last February shut down Metro North and I was unable to commute into NYC from CT. So I had to work from home… I didn’t hate it :)

Yup I wouldn’t hate that either. I remember reading about that shut down though!
I completely agree – they always build these things up so much!! Glad you had a great weekend. We went out-of-town to visit family and had a relaxing and fun time with them!! :)

The weathermen never seem to be right, but this time it was a good thing. Glad to hear you had a nice weekend :)
My last weather related cancellation was my sophomore year of college when the first two days of classes back after winter break were cancelled because we got a realllllllly bad snow storm. It was so weird that I had been back at school for the new semester for a few days and still hadn’t gone to class. Being stuck in my dorm room for a few days made me really stir crazy. I think I was actually excited to start classes by the time classes were scheduled again!

Even after 24 hours of precaution I was stir crazy! I was ready to get out, even if it meant going to CVS.
We get hit in Rhode Island with hurricanes/tropical storms every year, but never as bad as down south. I’m glad you didn’t end up getting anything! It’s kind of scary doing all of that prep, and it’s always a huge letdown when nothing comes of it. In a good way haha

That’s how I described it to my parents! A let down in a good way. In my dream world the storm wouldn’t have hit but they still would have cancelled classes out of precaution.
I’m so glad y’all wren’t hit badly by the storm! Even though you bought all of that extra gear for nothing, I’m sure it’s better to be safe than sorry :)

Now I’m all stocked up for the next possible storm. I heard people have “hurricane parties” so that could be fun :)
I have already decided that if Kanye runs for prez I’m leaving the US lollll
It would be entertaining more than anything else!
Although I have never experienced a hurricane first hand, I can appreciate how devastating they can be so I am glad you didn’t get hit directly!
We had a few days off due to snow during my last year at High School, so the situation wasn’t as dangerous as that of a hurricane, and we actually ended up having a lot of fun tobogganing in the local park- impromptu days off are always the best :)

That’s why I loved snow days! They weren’t scary and we didn’t have to fear for our safety.
I’m glad the storm didn’t cause any damage, but it is always a letdown when you expect to get a day off and don’t! I got plenty of snow days in high school (and even a couple in college), and I miss them now. But the worst day of high school was when it was below -30 with the wind chill, and we still had to go to school. We had to walk outside between buildings for classes, and it was so cold, it didn’t even feel cold, if that makes sense.

They still made you go to school?!? Should have been illegal- ha!
If Kanye runs for president I’m moving to Antarctica. Your dog is adorable and I want my dog to have a toy like that. Your dinner looks delishhhh and what church do you go to down there?!

I’ll have to ask my mom where she got that toy! I go to the one right by campus…St. Augustine.
I was so happy the weathermen got it wrong about the hurricane (or any bad weather ) hitting us! I hate rainy days, not to mention having to walk 2 miles to classes would be no fun at all! I think I got 5 emails from school about hurricane prep and to be on the lookout for class cancellations. Instead, I had a wonderful weekend and stayed dry walking to classes the past two days…win!

I feel like the Tampa area got it worse than we did in Miami! I got all those emails too. Guess it’s better to be over prepared?
u only left target with 2 things ! that is pretty much the most impressive thing i have heard all day ! : )
Haha I was very proud of myself :)
