True fans would not need any context to understand the title of this post. But, for all the rest of you, I’m referring to Monica Geller from Friends.
I’ve mentioned it before but my sister and I are the biggest Friends fans ever. Not only have we seen each episode a million times but we quote it daily. We have posters, pillows (I bought her this for graduation) and we know the names to almost all the 236 episodes. Have I made it clear that we are the biggest fans?
As much as everyone loves Rachel, I’m Monica. Her Type-A neurotic tendencies and weird habits are very similar to mine, although mine aren’t as intense. I’d like to think we are distant cousins. This has NOTHING to do with health, fitness or food, but I thought it would be a fun Thinking Out Loud post to highlight our similarities. I apologize to all you non-Friends fans for the following references. Actually, I don’t…you’re missing out.
8 Ways I’m Like Monica
1. I think rules are fun.
I like rules, structure, and control. While I’m not as hyper-organized as she is, I get shit done. Also, I believe we should only use fancy china when the Queen of England comes to visit.

2. I have a secret closet.
Well, mine’s not necessarily a secret or contained in a closet. It’s a corner of my bedroom…and it’s a mess. Clothes that are too dirty for the closet but too clean for the laundry, piles of books, and random Lululemon bags. I don’t think it’s indicative of my personality 90% of the time but we all need a place to let everything loose.

3. I talk loudly.
My family gets mad at me for saying things loudly at “inappropriate” times, like in a restaurant, movie theater, and sometimes at church.

4. I’m the mom of the group.
Monica is always the hostess. She takes care of her friends, buys them all presents, and constantly has a home-cooked meal on the table despite “working” at a restaurant. I may not go to all those lengths but I am the one to make sure everyone in my friend group is safe and happy.
5. I’m competitive.
I’m becoming less and less competitive as I get older but I still don’t like losing. I always make up some excuse in my head to justify my “loss” (they cheated, beginner’s luck, I took it easy, etc.).
6. I like being early.
Flight is at 9? Let’s get there at 5. I get that from my dad’s side of the family :) It’s one of my biggest pet peeves when people are repeatedly late.

7. I love mornings and waking up early.
I <3 mornings, but let’s not confuse a leisurely 7 a.m. wakeup with a 5:30 alarm.

Not to long ago I wrote that I’m a cross between Rachel & Monica. Love to cook, love fashion. Also a lifelong morning person here. Lost weight – several times – but always afraid of gaining it back.
However, I talk rather softly. My husband doesn’t hear so well anymore & his asking me to repeat myself can be rather annoying. Especially his annoyed tone as he asks — yet he refuses to have his hearing checked.

When I was little, I made my closet into my second room. My closet is the size of my room, it just has a slanted ceiling so most of the space can’t be used well, but it was my little hideout ;)

I watch Friends from time to time but have never actually watched it enough to know all of the characters, though I know I would love the show. I have a feeling if I start watching Friends, I’ll sit & watch a full season without moving haha

Minus being a loud talker (I actually talk really quietly), I could basically be Monica. When I watch Friends, I always picture myself as/want to be Rachel. But I’m so much more high-strung than that :P Fun fact: my parents almost named me Rachel, but decided against it because it was right during the height of Friends’ popularity and they figured a lot of other parents would do the same thing.

Oh my gosh..LOVE this post!! Monica is definitely one of my favorite characters, although I love them all. I have to admit that Rachel’s actually my least favorite character. I know, I know!! I love all the Thanksgiving episodes..they’re my favorite! And my favorite scene is probably when Joey puts on all of Chandlers clothes.. “Could I be wearing any more clothes?!” So random and hilarious.
My sister and I always say the Thanksgiving ones are the best. They always have funny guest starts too!
Ah my sister and I are the same! But sadly few people I spend time with these days get my Friends references :( I’m probably a Monica too. I always think “If it’s not a right angle, it’s a wrong angle” when tidying up. But I’m a little more relaxed about crummies :P Oh Friends…I think it’s time for a series rewatch :)
I get so sad when people don’t catch my references. I’m not too uptight about crummies either as I eat in bed sometimes haha
This is hilarious- I can definitely attest to having a few Monica qualities myself. One of my favorite episode of friends would have to be the one where Monica and Chandler ask Joey to write them a letter of recommendation for adoption, and the agency ends up being convinced that an 8 year old wrote it ;D!

Yes yes yes I love this! I’m just watching Friends for the first time (I’m half way through season 6) and I am so hooked on it. I think I have a lot in common with you and Monica! Especially with talking loud. Sometimes I think I’m very Chandler-esque too.
Oh you’re at a really good season! Chandler has the best one-liners…I wish I was that funny.
Welp. If I didn’t already know it, this post just confirmed we’re the exact same person. Especially to the competitive one. I’m the worst about coming up with excuses as to why I lost. I really need to watch Friends start to finish. I never have but I’ve always wanted to.

love this ! friends has a special place for me…when i first moved out my sister and i were not that close. she was 4 years younger and we shared a room. enough said. well…she started coming to my house on thursdays where i would tape (yes that would be vcr tape) friends and will and grace adn we would watch together. our entire adult relationship is based on that. i truly know we would never have never had a good relationship if not for those thursday nights. i dont even really know how they got started ! so thanks for the memory ! i love all episodes and we quote them a lot. i will never in my entire life move a piece of furniture and not scream PIVOT. nor will i look at my decorative towels and not think oh these are fancy guest ones : )
im such a friends girl. at the same time…i just dont get Seinfeld people.
That is a very special and unique story…glad I could bring back some memories :) “Pivot” is such a classic line, I think I say it when I move a piece of furniture too.
I’m also Monica through and through, so much so that I was nominated by all of my friends to play her character in a role-play we did based on the series during high school (they told me it would be easy as I wouldn’t really have to act!).

I feel like I’m in the minority when I say that I never really got into Friends. I watched plenty of it when I was growing up, but I guess I never paid enough attention? :lol: Please don’t throw things at me. I did like Monica though, and I’d probably relate the most to her as well.

HA! I had no idea you were so “Friend” obsessed…There are so many great episodes. I love the one when Ross is wearing the leather pants and can’t get them back on in the bathroom and uses baby powder to try to get them up. I also like the one when Ross goes to the tanning booth!

I am totally like Monica, too! All of those things above are true for me, too. So funny your bedroom is like her closet. I guess that’s one thing I’m not exactly like her with, but my room isn’t completely clean all the time, lol. I just watched the episode where Chandler announced he loves Monica after Phoebe went after Chandler. Hilarious!
My bedroom is embarrassingly messy (not dirty, just messy!). Oh I LOVE that episode. “They don’t know that we know they know we know.”
LOVE Friends! I knew what this post was going to be about as soon as I saw the title ;) I don’t think I’m a Monica, Rachel, or Phoebe actually…I’m not sure who I’d identify with! But Monica & Chandler’s characters are probably my favorite.

I sometimes wish I didn’t wake up so early! 7 is late for me.
So many of these things are so “me”. I’m definitely a competitive, early morning girl who is ALWAYS early to everything, is the Mom of the group and is a rule loving type-A kinda person haha.
