So…I got glutened.
For any new readers (hi!), I have celiac disease, which means I follow a very strict gluten-free diet. Beyond the obvious “don’t eat bread” rule, for celiacs, it means worrying about cross-contamination and hidden sources of gluten. Eating at restaurants is generally very challenging. I have my go-to places but even those aren’t perfect. Hence this situation.
Whether it was part of a streak of “bad luck,” a weak immune/digestive system or just because I’ve managed a few good years without an incident and was due for one, I got glutened this past weekend after eating at a restaurant. Won’t name names but I mentioned it in Monday’s post, which I wrote before I realized the situation.

Old picture, but same scene this week. Sub bone broth in for the blueberries.
It knocked me out in a way that felt all too familiar to life pre-diagnosis. Couch/bedridden for pretty much 48 hours, zero appetite, bloating, fatigue, pain and general blah-ness. I followed all the recommended remedies but it just took time, fluids and rest. I woke up feeling much better on Wednesday and then almost completely normal on Thursday (when I’m writing this).
Now that I’m mostly back in action, I’m choosing to have fun with it via light-hearted meme-filled post. Lemons into lemonade.
This totally applies to any time you’re sick, so change the “glutened” to your illness of choice.
Thoughts From the #Glutened Life
1. Seriously, what did I do to deserve this?
2. I want revenge.
3. I don’t remember what it feels like to be healthy.
4. How am I not hungry? I’m ALWAYS hungry.
5. Or maybe eating will make me feel better?
6. Nope. Can’t stomach anything.
7. *Takes a two-hour nap* Am I better?
8. I guess I’ll watch this Olympic water polo match. (Then I suddenly get really into it…)
9. *Opens Instagram* *Sees food and non-glutened people* *Closes Instagram*
10. Ok, I’m over this (being glutened and water polo).
11. *48 hours later* Is that hunger I feel?
12. I survived this. I’m literally so awesome.
Happy Friday! Hope you all have a great weekend.
I”m glad that you survived! getting Glutened SUCKS. I haven’t personally dealt with it, but I have seen it happen and oh, my dear, I feel for you!

Sucks is really the best word to describe it. So happy to be on the other side now!
Bummer, my celiac friend :/ It just puts us down and OUT!

It seriously reminded me of life before my celiac diagnosis and just how awful I felt then. Grateful to be back to normal!
Those meme’s are perfection. I hope you can avoid getting glutened again for a longgggggggg time–girl, that sounds awful!! :(

Seriously! Just the laugh I needed. Hope you had a great weekend!
So happy you are on the mend from this! I never realized how down and out getting glutened puts you out, so I am sure you are happy that you are feeling a whole lot better. Just in time for the weekend ;) Also, these memes are all perfect.

It’s really awful and not something I would wish for anyone! But so glad to have that episode behind me :)
Oh no!! I’m glad you’re feeling better. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. At least you can crack jokes about it, because that’s certainly no fun at all.

Much easier to crack jokes after the fact!
I’m so glad you’re feeling better! And the memes are excellent. So applicable to any sickness :D

I’m so glad you’re feeling better! I love the nap meme. That is literally me whenever I take a nap, even when I’m not sick, haha. I always wake up feeling groggy! :P

I never wake up looking pretty or well-rested. Always messy hair and in a confused state haha
Girl, being glutened literally is death. When people ask what it feels like, I basically say getting your period and having a case of the stomach flu all in one…plus getting run over by a car while you’re at it. Glad you’re feeling better! One of my least favorite things about celiac is when you feel a little off/tired/fuzzy/etc and you’re like, “Am I glutened? Or just run-down?” The struggle!

That is a perfect way to describe it. It’s ALL the feelings and symptoms. Brain fog is real!
I am so sorry this happened to you but SO THANKFUL for this post! Totally made me laugh out loud!!! Happy you’re better now!

Haha I’m glad! It made me laugh too :)
That seriously sucks! But I really appreciated this post. Last night I made cookies and I think I ate too much cookie dough or something because I was rolling around in my bed with the worst stomach cramps. Literally all of these memes were me. I thought it was the end. But hey I lived to tell the tale!
And now that last meme holds true. You’re your own role model :)
:'( I’m so sad that that happened to you; it’s always not fun to hear about others having struggles, and I know that it’s real. <3 I'm so thankful that God restores our bodies and heals us after those episodes; I haven't dealt with the gluten so much as other random things that irritate my stomach. <3 Thanks for being real Em.

Yeah it wasn’t a fun few days. I’m thankful to be back to normal!
Oh man, does that sound miserable! I appreciate your light-hearted take on the situation, though, and am so sorry you had to go through that. Glad you’re feeling better now!
Thanks, Liv! So happy to be feeling much better :)
Glad you are feeling better! And these memes are great LOL

Always get a good laugh from them :)
Oh noooo! Being glutened SUCKS! I am incredibly unlucky in that the effects from being glutened even by cross contamination lasts for weeks for me! It starts off with bloating and nausea, turns into full blown confusion and emotional mess-ness (in Bali on our honeymood i was really badly glutened and went from crying over South Park – which apparently I thought was sad? – to getting incredibly cranky over the location of the bathroom because apparently I didn’t like the door to not speaking to Jesse for two hours because I hated the whole world :P) to a zombie like state of nausea and fatigue. Nottttt pretty :P

On your honeymoon?! Uh I’m so sorry. The mental and emotional effects are SO real and I forgot about them until last week.
