***Thanks for your kind and supportive words on yesterday’s post. I think we can all agree that great things happen when we challenge ourselves**
Happy Friday! Although this is only my first week of class I’m very happy about the upcoming three-day weekend. I need an extra day to get my life together…and finally buy school supplies.
Today I want to share a new Instagram account called “Women in Real Life” @womenirl run by Real Simple magazine. I loved Real Simple before I discovered their new account (it’s my dream to work for them!) but this project has solidified my loyalty.

“Women in Real Life” showcases the moments that aren’t normally posted on social media. You know, the huge laundry pile in your room or the dinner you ate that looked like sh*t (excuse my language). Women tag their photos of “unfiltered moments” with #womenirl and the account will repost it. You will not see pictures of designer clothes, tidy desks, or 5-star restaurant meals because most people don’t live like that.
We don’t live Pinterest-perfect lives. Things are messy and random. We don’t always jump out of bed at 5 a.m. excited to workout. Our clothes don’t always match.
A lot of the photos are motherhood related, but the basis of the project is relatable to everyone.

This account reminds us to take social media posts with a grain of salt. We tend to share just the high points in our life and hide the majority of our day-to-day. I know it’s easy for me to fall into the comparison trap as I constantly see “perfect” pictures posted by friends, bloggers and celebrities. It’s refreshing to follow an account dedicated to unfiltered and imperfect moments. If nothing else, it’s gives me a laugh and some reassurance that I’m doing OK in life. Even when I don’t wear matching socks.
In the spirit of sharing REAL moments, here are some of my #womeninrl pictures from yesterday:
This is how excited I was to workout this morning. Dark circles, tired eyes and a completely non-matching outfit. The long-sleeved shirt did come off before I ran.
This was dinner last night. Awful lighting and a hodgepodge of food. I know it’s not very Emily Post-like to cut your food before you’re ready to take a bite, but I do.
This is the current state of my bathroom counter. I haven’t unpacked since I’ve been back (5 days now) and I’ve been living out of travel cases.
There you have it, my unfiltered moments from yesterday. I hope you have a perfectly imperfect weekend free of filters, touch-ups and stress :)
What is your #womeninrl moment from this week?
I think you wrote this for me! I’ve been really good about not getting sucked into the comparison of the picture perfect social media lives but this week it’s been on my mind. So much so that I avoided a lot of computer time. 2 mistakes comparison and looking at the images portrayed online as #reallife truth and nothing but the truth sharing all. Thanks for the kick in the butt I needed!

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I’ve definitely gotten better at realizing the “trap” of social media but I still need reminders.
Haha this is awesome. I think mine would be watching Law & Order SVU at 9pm in bed instead of finishing unpacking my room.

But that is SO much better. I need to watch some SVU reruns now.
My whole life is REAL life! It is always messy and not pretty! (That’s why you never really see and “real” photos on my instagram or blog!) I don’t have time or the desire to dress things up! I’m just trying to make it through each day!

Exactly, just doing the best we can, with what we have, where we are!
This is great-I might totally do some photos from an actual day in my life on my blog! My food rarely looks photographable and I never look cute before or after a workout haha.

Would love to see what you come up with! 90% of my food is not worthy of pictures haha
I love this post! Have you heard that quote, “Don’t compare your behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel”? This totally reminds me of that! It’s so easy to forget that no one else has it all together, either :)

One of my all-time favorite quotes! Easy to forget but important to remember.
This is awesome! I still have a halfway unpacked suitcase sitting in my room and I got home on Monday……

Don’t worry I got back Sunday and I’m still not there yet. Just doing the best we can!
I love REAL SIMPLE! I’m definitely going to check this out! :)

Aw, such a cute idea for a post! I love the message behind this :) I’m definitely going to check out that account. You should see me at the gym first thing in the morning.. let alone after a workout, oh lawwddd haha. Plus, like you said, we don’t all have Pinterest-perfect lives .. partiiiiiicularly my wardrobe! ;)

Oh I should have done a post-workout pic that morning! I’m laughing thinking about how I looked HA.
I haven’t vacuumed my apartment in weeks (maybe even months at this point). It feels a little embarrassing, but I live alone, so it’s not bothering anyone, and I’m glad I’ve been prioritizing fun over cleaning. I can be horrible about unpacking too – I hate that trips have to end with such an awful chore!

Yep, my bathroom isn’t bothering anyone and it will get cleaned eventually. Unpacking is the worst! And I’m the worst at it.
Gosh, I’m totally in love with the concept of Women in Real Life. While it is fun to daydream and see all of the beautiful Pinterest images/read fashion and home magazines, I’ve noticed that it does lend itself to creating jealousy and insecurities in me.

I’m the exact same way! I look at Pinterest/fashion blogs trying to boost creativity or get inspiration (recipes, workouts, clothes, design) but it sometimes works just the opposite.
