Hello from New York City! Well, I’m actually writing this in Tampa but by the time it’s published I’ll be there ;) I will check in in “real-time” in a few days.
Back to this past week…my workout highlight: trying Crossfit for the first time. It wasn’t a full class, just an intro session going over the basics and ending with a short baseline workout, see more below. Other than that I did a little of everything, which is typical as of late.
Sunday: Off. I stayed in sweats for most of the day and couldn’t have been happier.
Monday: Orange Theory (with my mom). 3.35 miles on the treadmill before starting the weight room circuit. I don’t exactly remember what we did but there were a lot of squats and burpees. Imagine my excitement over the burpees…
Tuesday: 5 miles. It was 80 degrees and 85% humidity at 6 freaking a.m. Slower than normal but I’m all for “adjusting expectations” in the summer.
Wednesday: Flow Yoga (called “Power Hour”). I don’t know how to accurately describe this class as it wasn’t a Vinyasa Flow but I don’t think the name “Power Hour” necessarily fit. But I LOVED this class. All of the sequences fit together so nicely and we didn’t hold things for too long, which was a change for me.
Thursday: 5.25 miles + Crossfit intro session.
After wanting to try Crossfit for the longest time I finally went to Cross Fit Tampa Bay for a free intro session. The coach gave me a tour of the box and demonstrated the exercises that would be in my baseline workout. I did a warm-up of 250 meters on the rowing machine and then did 10 reps of each exercise so the coach could check my form before the workout.
The workout:
-500 meter row
-40 air squats (lower than I normally go for squats)
-30 sit-ups
-20 push-ups (they were military press but I think of them as tricep push-ups. I did half on my knees)
-10 assisted pull-ups (I used a band and broke up the reps. I did 5 pull-ups, took a short break, 3, break, 2)
I finished in 8:32. I’m sure that’s not good for experienced Crossfitters but he said it was a great start. Everything was a “normal” part of my workout routine except for the pull-ups, which are so hard for me. I have a small interest in taking regular classes but it’s a costly and intense workout that requires commitment. I do want to give it another chance, at least for a month or so. Maybe when I’m back in Miami. We’ll see…
Friday: Orange Theory (with my mom again!). 3.4 miles on the treadmill and A LOT of leg work in the weight room. Walking lunges, bench step-ups with a hop, reverse lunges, rowing and a few upper body moves (not many though). My quads were dead.
Saturday: Vinyasa flow
Talk to you soon! Have a great Sunday xo
I hope you get safe and sound to NYC! XOXO
Ah! Crossfit! One day I’d love to try it too! All the hype!

It was really great to try and hopefully when I’m less nomadic I can attend regularly.
My brother has been trying to get me to go to crossfit with him for months but I’m nervous to go, so I’ve held out on it. I like the idea of an introductory class to learn about all the crossfit lingo before going into a WOD.
Best of luck with the move to NYC! Can’t wait to hear all about it!

No way I could have jumped into a regular class! The intro was a great way to get acclimated to the moves, terms and structure of the class.
You had another great week. I’m glad you were able to try crossfit. I have never even considered it. I would like to do yoga. Have fun in NYC!

I think I prefer yoga over Crossfit but I’ll have to try more than once before I declare that!
I’ve always wanted to try cross fit, I’m pretty sure that those pull ups would destroy me too though!! First step for me = mastering push ups, then I’ll think about pull ups haha.
Have a good flight! :)

I still don’t know if I can say I’ve “mastered” the push-up. I can do wide-armed push-ups but Crossfit wants close-armed. Those are harder for me!
I did 6 miles yesterday in Houston and it was hot and humid too…I’m not going to complain though, because it was sunny. Looks like a great week of workouts. Can’t wait to hear how NYC is going! xoxo

I much much prefer the sun and heat over the alternative. I’ll pass on the humidity though ;)
I am impressed you lasted 5 miles in 85% humidity! You are a serious athlete right there! Looking forward to hearing how NYC is! :)

I feel much stronger running in the morning. If it was that temperature in the afternoon I would have bagged my run so quickly :)
